The role of the solicitor

It’s important that buyers have an independent solicitor, someone who isn’t acting for the Housing Association or the lender. The solicitor’s job is to guide people through the process of buying their own home. This includes:

  • Housing association Giving them advice on the Shared Ownership lease.
  • Explaining the homeowner’s obligations and responsibilities.
  • Preparing all of the legal paperwork.
  • Arranging the exchange and legal completion of the home purchase.

There are a number of solicitors who specialise in Shared Ownership and we can recommend one from our panel. If the chosen solicitor isn’t familiar with the processes involved we’ll be happy to work together with the Housing Association to ensure that they understand every step.
